There is a lot of talk in ecommerce circles about when an online business is big enough to have online credit card processing. Or that point where it is getting enough traffic to warrant the addition of merchant services. Some feel it should it be associated with reaching a certain level of profitability. While there may be merit in all of the above, those assertions assume that online credit card merchant accounts are something that has to be achieved by a specific level of business activity. And none of these things take into account the opinion of the most important player in this whole equation –the consumer. And that person is the element that trumps all other considerations. The nature of consumers is that they want something and most of the time they want it as quickly as they can reasonably get it. While that trait may not work well in other aspects of social behavior there are many online business owners who have made their reputations from successfully meeting that need for speedy consumer gratification. As such look at your business as though you were the customer visiting your site for the first time. They have no idea how big you are, and they really don’t care as long as you can deliver merchant services. And they are going to expect to be able to at least have the option to pay by credit card.
