You could always say that at the end of the day, the anaerobic bacteria (which are always present in the human mouth no matter how great your oral hygiene regimen!) can actually cause gum disease and that the fact for sure. Even though your mouth is always filled with both beneficial and harmful bacteria, the body can prevent most gum disease problems from ever starting with saliva. Whereas bad habits are not always responsible for helping these harmful bacteria breed to the point of causing periodontal gum disease problems, they are the most likely suspects. To be reasonable, conversely, there are other factors that can cause gum disease problems that it more leads to gum disease.
